Veteran Los Angeles painter Roy Dowell is showing seventeen new and recent vinyl on linen paintings and one painted cardboard sculpture at As Is. The imagery in much of this work establishes a tension between rhythmically patterned and emotive folk motifs on the one hand, and modernist geometric abstraction--with its sometimes dark implications of instrumental rationality--on the other; the artist suggestively setting these two attitudes side by side without insisting on a final reconciliation. Dowell's work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Hammer Museum and in many other significant institutional and private collections. He lives and works in Los Angeles and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
